In-Character Information
Name: Sonja
Game/Series: Advance Wars
Age & Grade Level: 16, Junior (NERD)
Personality: Sonja's one of the few, the brave, the boring straight-men. Unlike many of her Advance Wars 'acquaintances,' Sonja's exclamation mark key AND caps lock key are broken-- save for occasional frustration outburst and excitement about THE RULES. WHICH ARE AMAZING. AND YOU SHOULD FOLLOW THEM. When left to her own devices, Sonja's pretty boring-- she loves research and computers and the rules and getting gold stars for her studies and things to make sense. BORING.
But good for us, Sonja has to interact with crazy people, like Lash (and her ridiculous father), who push Sonja completely out of her comfort zone and force her to actually develop a bit beyond Miss Rules. Because Sonja *can* lighten up (a bit) around others-- she tends to adapt her techniques to the situation at hand and be a tad bit more relaxed. She might even make a joke! Wow, party girl! That adaptability has also served her pretty well as a survival instinct, because Sonja had to become hyperaware of people and objects in order for her OCD brain to survive. Knowing where her father stashed his socks can save time and lives. Trust Sonja, she knows. This helps a lot with her CO work, but has been super helpful as she deals with high school life and the unpredictable people she encounters. Because observing people? Totally is her way of learning the RULES OF BEHAVING IN NEW PLACES.
Which brings us to Sonja's ridiculous morals that everyone should follow because she is RIGHT. How she became grudging friends with Lash is a mystery, but she has taken upon herself to teach the girl morals and has failed miserably at it. Although, if you look at the statistics that Sonja keeps on her pet project (and trust us, she keeps notes on EVERYTHING), she's imagined herself a slight (teeny-tiny) influence by that one time Lash actually refrained from blowing something up. We're sure she just got distracted by a more devious (and fun!) plot.
Sonja's completely ruled by her brain, which you can bet is structured like a tree of folders with nested documents, all perfectly categorized and easy to retrieve information. This is where the interaction with Lash makes sense the most-- Lash is basically your mad genius, and Sonja can't help but respect that about Lash even if she dislikes the results and methods Lash uses. Brains trump brawn in Sonja's world, which is why she's in for a rude awakening away from the strict military life of Yellow Comet and in the wilds of high school. She's taken it upon herself to interact with Lash a lot to keep the girl out of trouble-- she doesn't quite trust Lash not to explode the universe or, you know, be secretly evil. Which turned easily enough into Operation: Teach Lash Morals, because people who know right from wrong won't destroy the world! Right?
What truly frustrates Sonja more than anything else is her terrible luck. You can't really predict when her poor luck is going to screw one of her plans over, and when her most!perfect!plan!ever! is ruined by a flash-flood in the desert. She's developed a fatalistic view of her plans in recent years, and spends more time figuring out all that can go wrong (and how to deal with those contingencies) than her plans themselves. Unfortunately, Sonja can't predict when her poor luck is going to throw a wench into things, but that doesn't stop her from trying. And don't get her started on stupid computer bugs that ALWAYS seem to be crashing her beloved computers...
Backstory: Records before Sonja took over Yellow Comet's paperwork are rather spotty, but Sonja believes she is the only child of Kanbei, Emperor of Yellow Comet and self-professed 'modern' Samurai (she hopes her father never comes to the school, for the fight between Kanbei and Goroh would be very distressing). She certainly has no memory of any additionally family, but she is aware there is a significant chance her dotty father could have misplaced another wife or a troop full of children. If her father can lose an entire shipment of vital things like socks, Kanbei can definitely misplace a little thing like another family.
Her earliest memory was tackling the national budget with her plastic toy calculator. Sonja had to learn to be frugal after her father's ridiculous military spending threatened to deplete the Yellow Comet coffers (really, Father, that much money to paint your tanks gold? Doesn't that just make them better targets?). As she took over Yellow Comet's paperwork, she grew to despise her father's wasteful spending, realizing early on that her father's lack of funds was crippling his units. As Sonja prides herself of her brains, calculating all sorts of ways she can get her best bang for her buck is one of her favorite activities-- and a great way to thumb her nose as her father. Who she loves. Most of the time. When he's not running around painting his tanks gold and taking them into a forest terrain.
She was never formally conscripted into Yellow Comet's military and never had to work her way through the ranks. When the Black Hole threat began to be known, Sonja set aside a small portion of the budget and, much as she did everything else, stamped her father's signature onto the paperwork for her new troop. She rightfully realized they needed more than one capable CO (and really, how different is leading men and women in tanks from the wrangling of numbers and papers she did every day?) or Yellow Comet was screwed. She didn't have much faith in her father's abilities. She was a decent CO, but discovered early on her weakness when it came to head-on confrontation. This extends off the battlefield. Because she excels in situations where she can hide and get some needed recon on the situation which allow her to come up with a great plan. But in the open field, facing her opponent? Sonja usually got her butt handed to her. Especially in situations with Ms. Quickness Sami (who she interacted negatively with back in her school days) or Ms. Blow Your Pants Off Lash.
Sonja actually had a lot of fun at war, possibly because she got to sit back and direct people and not get her hands dirty at all. She used her brains to figure out the whole Sturm plot, and even reconciled with Sami, cooling their rather luke-warm rivalry. Her big dilemma in the war came in the second wave, when she had to fight a clone of her father. She succeeded in her mission and the world did not end. Hurrah. And no father, you cannot spend half the budget on fireworks to celebrate the war ending. Certainly not spending any money a gold statue of yourself crushing Sturm's head with your foot. Really.
When she learned many of her CO acquaintances and Lash were heading back to school, Sonja decided she would go to. After all, school couldn't be that much different from war and number crunching... right?
Anything Else?:
* Extremely unlucky. If you value your health, you might want to avoid being her partner in classes.
* The word that Sonja abuses the most is "Indeed." The second is "Really."
* Although Sonja does wear glasses, she doesn't need them. She simply wears them because they make her appear more intelligent to her opponents. The lens are actually just clear glass.
* Sonja really, really hates bugs. She will freak the bejesus out if one even looks at her. In fact, she assumes many non-human, vaguely bug-appearing characters are really just evolved bugs and at first is seriously grossed out. She hates computer bugs too, but doesn't come unhinged when she encounters one like she does stupid real bugs that don't follow the rules omg.
* Sonja keeps detailed records of her observations in her notebook. She's kind of a habitual spy. XD She also keeps track of the most random (well, to us) statistics. She's kind of a numbers girl ;).
* In November, Sonja participating in Nanowrimo. She didn't write a novel, however, but a 1,000 page manual of where things are so her father can stop bugging her to come home and find his stupid socks. She stayed home for a few months because her father was completely unable to handle paperwork without her, but eventually found out he hadn't even read her manual and left in an uncharacteristic capslock fury, returning back to the school. Really Kanbei? Really?
